When disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier witnesses her gangster boyfriend, Curtis Shank, kill one of his buddies, she reports this to the police who then puts her in protective custody – in a convent! Disguised as Sister Mary Clarence, Deloris finds herself at odds with the rigid lifestyle of the convent and the uptight Mother Superior but when she is introduced to the struggling convent choir, everything changes. Using her disco moves, she inspires the choir and with this new contemporary style, they become a hit both within the church and the community. However, in doing so, her cover is blown and Curtis and his gang soon give chase only to find themselves up against the power of the sisterhood.
